Grind Movie Review

Movie Review

This is one of those movies that must start watching without any preconceived notions that it will be anythng more than a bit of light entertainment. There are plenty of movies around like that and they are usually panned by the critics, but what do they know? Grind is a road trip story about four skateboarders who follow a pro-skater around the country hoping he will notice them and sign them up as sponsored riders.

What transpires is the usual fare of weird characters, for example the rap skaters, dick and fart jokes, a bit of skating and some good music. Actually, the skate footage could have been a bit better and I can only guess the budget was pretty low for this one. There are some very funny moments and they are not necessarily the crude ones, although they are funny as well. What I liked about this flick was the soundtrack. I am not a fan of much of the skate/bmx crap music but this one is different. Perhaps because it has a few old 80s and 90s songs. Them singing along to Poison in the car is perhaps a tribute to Wayne's World and the Bohemian Rhapsody.
Sweet Lou played by Joey Kern is almost identical to Matthew McConaughey's character in Dazed and Confused. They are the guys who hang around the high schools just a bit too long and target the young girls. No-one seems to be able to resist Sweet Lou's charms.

I love any film that has the characters singing or dancing along to the soundtrack and they do it twice in this one. Much the same as Richard Gere in Breathless and Tom Cruise in Jerry Macguire and Rain Man.

Also has small roles by Bam Margera and himself and Randy Quaid as one of the parents. He is just plain weird in this one. A pleasant surprise was Jennifer Morrison who I hadn't seen before.

Quotes

You know what? I just got violated by a lizard, man. Actually, that felt pretty good.

Hold on, I'm gonna go get you another glass of bitch

Guys, I'm right here

Useless Information

The only person to reject Sweet Lou is played by the wife of the director

The character of Sweet Lou could have been based on the David Wooderson character in Dazed and Confused which also starred Jason London

Jennifer Morrison's stunt doubles were two girls aged 13 and 14 wearing really bad blonde wigs
