Movie Review
Point Break should never be considered a surfing film. It is a crime film that happens to involve people who surf and therefore more than a few scenes are set at the beach. Keanu Reeves plays a new FBI detective assigned to the robbery division in Los Angeles. Of course he is partnered with the veteran Gary Busey, who doesn't conform to the standard as set by his superiors. He does have a theory on who has been pulling a number of bank heists and believes that it might be surfers because the robberies only happen during the summer months. Reeves ends up going undercover to prove the theory correct. He gets seduced by the surfing lifestyle and begins to understand the culture. Of course it helps if you are given surfing lessons by some-one like Lori Petty.
Patrick Swayze plays the leader of a bunch of adrenaline junkies who surf, party, sky dive and numerous other things. The surfing footage is obviously fake, even though they did some of there own, it's just that sometimes the waves are way less than a metre and the next minute they are well over that. John Stockwell managed to do it much better in Blue Crush.
The scenery is not bad and whilst it is a beach movie, they still manage to get a scene up on Mulholland that gives a good view over the city of Los Angeles. I've lost count of the number of movies that have this scene.
Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers plays a small part as a local surfer not happy about the new guy cutting in on some of his waves. The final scene at Bells Beach was not filmed at Bells. Anyone who has been there would know that there are no shops that close to the beach. Putting a right hand drive Land Rover and a sentence or two from the Australian actor Peter Phelps doesn't make it any more Australian either. The put on accent by the policeman is attrocious.
That said, I have watched this movie heaps and times and enjoy it for what it is, a light piece of entertainment with a half decent soundtrack. If you have read some of my other reviews you will know I generally watch beach setting films quite often.
