Pump Up The Volume Movie Review

Actors

Christian Slater, Samantha Matthis

Movie Review

The first time I watched this movie I stuck the video in and pressed play. My mohter was in the room and the first line uttered by Christian Slater was, "Do you ever get the feeling that everything in America is completely fucked up?" Sure got Mum's attention.

Slater plays a teenager forced to move from the east coast to Arizona because his father took a job in the local school district. He is a bit of a loner but by night he runs a pirate radio station as the DJ, Happy Harry Hard On. It's like a Jeckyl and Hyde character and he can say anything he wants because he disguises his voice and n-one knows who he is. He uses this to expose a number of injustices inflicted upon the school kids by ohter kids and the school administrators.

Samantha Matthis plays the love interest and uncovers who Happy Harry is. She encourages him to keep broadcasting after some events that the school administrators blame on him.

There's a great soundtrack with songs ranging from the Beatie Boys to Leonard Cohen. Does anyone have trouble accepting the name Beastie Boys now that they are approaching their forties? Wave of Mutiliation by The Pixies has to be the best song on the soundtrack album. The DVD doesn't have any special features which is disappointing but it is still worth buying.
