Swordfish Movie Review

Actors

John Travolta, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Don Cheadle, Sam Shepard, Vinnie Jones

Movie Review

This film gained notoriety beause of one scene that lasts probably no more than a minute. It shows Halle Berry topless and based on the reported sums offered to her by magazines to do the same thing, the producers of Swordfish must have been good negotiators. John Travolta plays the baddie and like his character in Broken Arrow, I think he does it very well. He is also one of those actors that I would probably watch in just about anything. Australian Hugh Jackman plays the ex-computer hacker dragged into the web of intrigue. Good support by Don Cheadle as the cop with a human side but also a job to do.

Whilst the story line is reasonable, I think it suffers a bit when trying to show how technology can be used to manipulate things. The computer they use is supposed to be this fancy system and except for a few screens, what it does could be done with a lot less impressive looking unit. But then wouldn't be as fun either. Jackman should also learn to fake touch typing a bit better. Although I might type a bit funny if a similar thing was happening to me as happened to him in the first meeting with Travolta's character. I'll leave the explanation to you once you see the movie.

One of the things that amazed me about Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction was the way the film movie through, not necessarily in chronological order. Swordfish is similar in that one of the opening scenes is actually half way through the movie. It isn't that out of place that you will need to watch it more than once as is the case with some movies that try to do this. Add the plot twist towards the end and I think the director Dominic Sena has put together a decent flick. Not rocket science but not mindless drivel either.
