Movie Review
Possibly my most watched movie although I haven't watched it for a while. Have the video, the soundtrack, the film poster and the DVD. Also read a draft of the script that must have been an early one because it varied a lot from the film. I think it is the best John Hughes movie and also probably one of the simplest with the whole film takes place inside a school, Shermer High, except for the first and last scenes when the main characters are arriving and leaving the school. The five main characters being Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, and Anthony Michael Hall. They have to spend a whole Saturday in detention and it is about how five people all with different interests and backgrounds interact throughout the day.
The first time I watched it I just rewound the video and started watching it again. As with a number of movies there are references at the beginning which are more meaningful once you have seen the end. Take note of the narration at the beginning. In case you are wondering, the quote at the beginning is from David Bowie. As the opening credits are rolling you will see a photo of the Man of the Year, the next time you see him he is the janitor, who is a lot smarter than all the kids give him credit for, until the realise.
The part I enjoy the most is after the conversation gets a bit heavy when they are sitting aorund on the floor and Anthony Michael Hall's character explains why he is in detention. Ally Sheedy's character then tells her story and they start laughing. They way Anthony rolls around is great. The soundtrack then launches into We Are Not Alone by Karla DeVito. Forgive my ignorance but has she had any other songs?
I've read that the joke Judd Nelson starts and never finishes was not really a joke. "A woman walks into a bar with..." Surely some-one can come up with a punch line to actually make it a joke.
