Movie Review

Now many people are going to wonder why the hell I like this film. Just remember I like extreme sports and the LA beach scene. The story is pretty basic and predictable, however, that's not why I like it. Really I suppose it's just the handful of skating scenes and the soundtrack. There is some very early Read Hot Chilli Peppers in a scene that was cut down significantly. There were some associated with the film that didn't want them in there at all. Isn't hindsight a funny thing.

A relative cast of unknowns at the time although some famous names. Josh Brolin, James' son, is one of the male leads and Robert Russler is the other. Pamela Gidley appears in her first feature and whilst she hasn't gone on to many other things (at least that I have seen), she does have a small recurring role in CSI - Crime Scene Investigators. Also a great photo of her in the photography book, A Day In The Life Of Hollywood. If you haven't looked at the Day In The Life Of series of books then I highly recommended it.

The skate gang features some of the best skaters of the time including Tony Alva, Tony Hawk, Mark Munski, Christian Hosai, Steve Caballero, Per Welinder etc.

The DVD features a short documentary and a commentary with the writer, Alan Sacks, Robert Russler and Josh Richman. I was disappointed with the commentary as they spent the whole time trying to be funny, making 'in' jokes and criticising poeple. Very little commentary about actually making the film. I guess it is just as difficult to find the correct mix of technical, insights, and lightheartedness when doing a commentary. The criticism of Tony Hawk, who skated in a scene at Delmar, just comes off as jealousy to me. Maybe they are all good friends and it was another joke but to the uninformed it was unnecessary, or maybe it revenge for comments Hawk made in one of his books. Yes, both sides criticised the other, one just did it a bit more professionally. Perhaps they all should have left it alone.

That said, I still watch it regularly and recommend it to anyone who likes a bit of escapism and a bit of skateboarding thown in. Guess it's just good to go back to the 80s when skateboarding was popular, and the fashions were awful.
